Mitsui is engaged in the business of generating ethanol using LanzaTech's microbial fermentation technology in the U.S. In May 2018, the first commercial plant started operation in Hebei Province, China, and continues to operate stably.
While most bioethanol is normally produced from corn and other edible feedstocks, LanzaTech's ethanol, which is derived from gases containing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide derived from non-edible feedstocks, does not compete with food and offers a higher CO2 reduction potential.
In addition to fuel applications, LanzaTech is also working on CarbonSmart, which converts ethanol to ethylene to replace fossil fuel-derived petrochemical feedstocks.
